At the Point of Pain

1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

I went to an event the other day that involved people who were coping with the loss of a baby through premature birth, still birth, and infant death. It was pretty intense for me. My granddaughter was still born about 1 1/2 years ago. It still hurts but I  anticipate seeing Annabelle as a wonderful person that has experienced the mercy and presence of God. I have hope…but I still grieve. I identified with the people present at that event, maybe 75 of them; I felt their pain.

Believers intersect those who have little or no faith at the point of pain. We all suffer, no exceptions. We are united in our understanding of those who suffer the same wounds in which we suffer. Yet in Jesus, we have hope. What a privileged to stand beside a fellow suffering human being and weep with them. What a joy to share Christ if they ask a reason of the hope that is in us. We don’t have to shout out our differences, we just need to whisper our sympathy and share a brief moment of love and understanding.

One of my pastors’ used to say, “be kind to everyone for everyone is having a tough day.”

Those who wear the shoe know best where it pinches.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892)
