Earth Day. It all started in my generation on April 22, 1970. It rivaled the Vietnam War rallies of the late 60’s. It was an effort to put environmental issues on the front burner of public awareness. As Bible believers, Christians need to be the leaders in being caretakers of the earth, since that has been our marching orders since the Garden of Eden. Like everything in this life, it needs perspective. Jeremiah’s proclamation in Jeremiah 22:29 was not in celebration of Earth Day, it was a warning of imminent judgment. As important as it is to care for the environment, it pales in the emphasis that we should have in proclaiming salvation in Jesus Christ to those who are facing certain judgment. The Earth will not last forever, the souls of its inhabitants are eternal.
