A Prayer for 9/11

11 09 2012

This is the invocation I gave at a local Air Force Base today.

Almighty God, we stand in awe on this solemn anniversary as we pause to remember the day that changed us all. We must remember lest those in the land of the free forget the deeds of the brave, overlook our strength in unity, and neglect the character that can only be forged in the fires of testing. We remember the unsuspecting innocents whose lives were taken in one moment of time. We remember the courage of the NYFD as they ran up dozens of floors to rescue the helpless and bring hope to the terrified. We remember the gut wrenching horror we all felt when the towers fell. We remember the call to arms and the many thousands who responded. We remember the almost 6500 men and women who gave their last full measure of devotion. We remember that you are our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

As our whole nation will collectively pause in just a few minutes, fill us with hope and drive away despair. Let us be grateful that the strong-arm of terrorism is losing its grip and that the king of terror has been brought to justice.

We ask that You protect the guardians of freedom who are deployed or will be deployed. Let the officers be filled with the wisdom that vigilance demands. Let the NCO and newly enlisted take up the mantle of integrity and honor once worn by those who came before them.

Last of all we ask that through your love you would cast out fear; that through your grace you would give us strength; and through your presence you would grant us peace that passes understanding. Our most gracious Father, deliver us from evil yet let us always show compassion to those who are the victims of evil.

In Thy Name, Amen.
