Got Hope?

20 06 2012

No hope. It’s what turns a search and rescue into a recovery; it’s the criteria for “pulling the plug”; it’s the bottom line of a failed marriage. They may be the saddest two words in our vocabulary. Hope is a basic necessity of life yet very difficult to find if this world is your only point of reference. Hope is not to be found in the newspaper, in more money, in better security, in another job, in a change of leadership, or whatever. Hope is only to be found in the Bible. Let me explain.

Most people confuse hope with being optimistic, and yet a positive disposition puts the burden of hope upon you. Perhaps some would define it as a desire for circumstances to turn out right (like, “I hope it doesn’t rain”). This puts the burden of hope on chance and uncontrollable events. True hope is much stronger. The Bible calls it an anchor (Hebrews 6:19). The thing about an anchor is it doesn’t move, even if storms are raging above or the ship gets battered by the waves. The burden of hope is not on disposition or chance, it is on the anchor. Hope comes as we fasten our life to that which is unmovable, in spite of what is thrown at us.

Hope is found in being anchored to promises that can not be broken, made by a God who can not lie. Such promises are not found anywhere but the Bible. So put down the paper and pick up a Bible. It gives hope to the hopeless, strength to the weary, and direction tot the lost. God hope? “That we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope” Romans 15:4
