“The Help”

I listened to the audio version of this book by Kathryn Stockett and it may be one of the best books I’ve ever read! It is set in Jackson, Mississippi in the early to mid 60’s. I admit that I had some stereotypes of the deep South before the Civil Rights Movement that were completely blown away. Oh there was segregation, embarrassingly clear segregation. But there was also love, respect, and genuine gratitude.

The book’s three main characters Aibieen, Minny, and Skeeter, are so real that you feel like you know them. The author portrays herself as Skeeter and the other characters are similar to people she grew up with during that time period in that city.

I know there is a movie, but the book was so good that I do not feel like any movie would do it justice. I do not want to ruin the plot for you, just to get you thirsty enough to read it and drink at the fountain of its refreshing and tragic story.

Incredible book and great that it had had so much publicity, there is much to be appreciated.
